"Day trips to eternity" by Lionel Blue
Published by DLT, ISBN 0 232 51720 7. Price £2.95
Known to many for his pithy, and often humorous, "Thought
for the Days" on Radio 4, Lionel Blue here provides sixty short "thoughts"
for you to peruse at your leisure. None of them will take you more than
sixty seconds to read, and their wit and wisdom could be just what you need
at the start, or end, of a hectic day.
The theme of Lionel Blue's book is spirituality. His is
not a spirituality that is always recognisable if you are used to reading
more conventional writers on the subject. Instead, in a longer introduction
(all of ten minutes to read!) he discusses what he thinks of as spirituality.
His ideas of what counts as spiritual are broad, and I warmed to them quickly.
He is not one who believes that spirituality is just for "holy moments"
- whether they be on Saturdays or Sundays - but that spirituality is an
essential part of everyone's life, and necessary for good humanity.
An hour or ten minutes to read, or a gem a day for two months;
either way this book will give you plenty to reflect upon. Final thought:
Like many things, faith is cultivated through habit. Whether you read a
little book of spirituality like this, or the Bible reading notes such as
are sold at the back of church, cultivate the habit of giving a little bit
of each day for God to be able to tell you something he's wanting you to
hear.
