The third millennium has recently begun. So, you
should know by now if your micro-chip operated
toaster has been bitten by the millennium bug. For
many the new millennium is something far bigger -
it's the dawning of a new age - an age that expects
to leave behind many things some feel humanity has
outgrown. One of these is traditional religion,
including Christianity. And yet, this in only the
year two thousand because of the birth of the founder
of that very faith. The date has no other
significance without reference to this fact. It's
also a view that ignores the experience of much of
the world. True, Christianity may be shrinking in
Europe, but it is growing across the rest of the
globe. This alone does not make it right of course,
but it does mean we would be foolish to ignore it.
With this in mind, the Arch-bishop of Canterbury
has prepared his message for the millennium. He
hasn't broken any new ground. In fact, it's a message
that's been heard many times before. But, it's a
message well worth repeating. George Carey writes for
Christian and non-Christian alike. In simple language
he sets out the story of Jesus, a story he sees as
relevant irrespective of time. He explains why he
sees this story as relevant to each one of us, and
how it can begin to change our lives. This is clearly
not an exhaustive analysis of all the theories
examining the life of Jesus. But, it is one person's
view, written from their own experience, of a life
that can change the lives of others.
At the dawn of a new millennium this short book is
worth a read. It would make an ideal gift too.
