The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Mohammed
Iqbal attended St Edmund's church on Friday 3rd November to plant a magnolia
tree kindly donated by Cllr Paul Wadsworth. It was presented by Community
Action For Roundhay Elderly (CARE) who took up occupancy of the office space
in the parochial hall in June 2006.
Lesley Pearson, the Project Manager of CARE, said we wanted to give a symbol
of CARE living and growing in the community and in particular at our new
home at St Edmund's. The Lord Mayor said what a good thing trees are for
the community as they have different branches but all arise from the same
stem. The ceremony was attended by the three Roundhay ward councillors,
Councillor Matthew Lobley, Chair of CARE, Cllr Valerie Kendall, representative
of Leeds Social Services on the CARE Management team and Cllr Paul Wadsworth.
Mike Fox, member of Community Action For Roundhay Elderly's Management Committee
and Paul Ellis, chair of the Grounds Committee for St Edmund's. Older people
from Roundhay were invited but unfortunately none of them were able to be
present at that time.
The tree itself is approximately 5' 6" tall and is on the North Park
Road side on the grass behind the car park, between the flowering cherry
and the scout hut. The location was chosen by Paul Ellis as he felt it was
the best place for all passers-by to enjoy. Paul is planting the tree in
the picture below.
