Carlo Curley review

A large and enthusiastic audience of music-lovers
was treated to a gourmet feast of music at St
Edmund's on June 23rd from not one, but two terrific
organists.
The first one hardly needs an introduction; Carlo
Curley is world famous, and his performance showed
just why he has acquired such a huge following, and
been invited to play for Royalty and the President of
the USA. And the second organist needs even less
introduction, for she is our own Susan Auty, whose
brilliant duet with Carlo was one of the highlights
of a memorable evening. It was a virtuoso performance
made all the more remarkable when the concert's
organiser Brian Sampford revealed that a
misunderstanding had led to both organists learning
the same half of the piece - and that Susan had
volunteered to learn the other half on the afternoon
of the concert itself!
Just how taxing a job this would have been was
made clear through Carlo Curley's "Whistle-Stop
Tour of the Organ", an introduction to the range
and inner workings of this complex King of
Instruments. Armed with a little bit of inside
knowledge, the audience was able to appreciate all
the more the wonderful programme of music that Carlo
had chosen, including works by Bach, Handel, Dvorįk
and many others.
The concert raised just over £2000, to be split
between Water Aid and church funds - a terrific
effort to mark St Edmund's Centenary Year.
