Changing the World
In 2010 Guiding celebrates 100 years. In the
run up to this the Changing the World project aims to leave a lasting legacy.
Working with 18 partner charities and branch associations there are 19 different
projects for girls to choose to take part in. The concept being that by
each unit making a small contribution to a bigger effort a lasting change
will occur. Each project involves a combination of raising awareness, direct
action and fundraising. The girls at St Edmunds have so far chosen to support
Save the Children, World Wildlife Fund, Plan UK, Book Aid, WaterAid, Crisis
and Guiding Branch Associations.
After the February Church Parade we plan to have a second hand book stall
in aid of Book Aid International which works to provide over half a million
books to sub-Saharan Africa each year to support education, training and
literacy. We send books on all kinds of subjects from children's picture
books and text books to books on farming and basic healthcare.
Following the June Church Parade we have refreshments from the Island Café
which supports the Guiding Branch Associations in a number of small islands
and countries, which, in response to the wishes of the inhabitants, have
chosen to retain their political links with the United Kingdom. Girlguiding
Anguilla, one of the Branch Associations, has about 100 members and has
been in existence for 75 years. Their wish for the Centenary year is to
establish an internet café where their girls and young women can
meet and socialise in a safe and secure girl-only space. What's more, the
café will also provide a space for study and homework clubs.
