Children’s Hope - moving onward

The trustees of Children’s Hope (Europe) would like to thank the people of St Edmund’s for the support recently agreed by the PCC towards our sponsorship of local church projects among homeless and disadvantaged children in Ukraine. We have also recently been granted official charitable status, enabling us to boost our income from donations under the Gift Aid scheme, so 2003 has got off to a great start!

Just to update you on what is happening out there,  the main project which we support, a small children’s home in a suburb of Kyiv, has recently moved into more permanent, larger premises, jointly owned with the home’s Director - almost 5% of the total purchase price being met by the proceeds of last year’s National Three Peaks walk, which many of you sponsored me for!  To mark this significant development, we are launching a special “Buy a Bed” appeal, aiming to replace the existing dilapidated beds with six brand new bunk beds and all the accompanying bedding, so that each child will have a really comfortable and cosy place to sleep in their new home.  The idea is that individuals or groups can raise the money to buy one bunk bed (with its mattresses, pillows, duvets and sheets) at a cost of £200, and will then receive a certificate and photograph of ‘their’ bed and its occupants, together with a personal letter from the two children who will be sleeping in that bed, in the hope that a lasting pen-friendship may develop. I would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in taking part in this scheme.

In addition, we plan to arrange a further sponsored walk, over the weekend of 21st June. This year, we intend walking the 60 mile Leeds Country Way, and would like to invite other walkers to join us, as we hope to double the money raised last year to at least £2,000.  There are two possibilities; the keen walkers among us are hoping to complete the full circuit in 24 hours, while, for the more sane participants, there will be the option of completing one or more of the four 15 mile sections at a more leisurely pace.  We will also be needing a number of marshalls to help monitor the event on the day.  If you can help in any of these capacities, please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your interest, prayers and support!
