Prayer for Change
At this time of World Cup football fever
we pray for all who are involved
as players or spectators:
that all players may find joy in their game,
satisfaction from seeing the pleasure it gives to others,
strength and integrity to withstand the temptations that
accompany fame and success,
disappointment and failure;
that all supporters may show loyalty
that does not depend on success,
rivalry that does not erupt into hatred,
and enthusiasm that does not exceed
the bounds of good behaviour,
so that everyone may enjoy the gift
of fair and friendly competition.
At this time of economic crisis, political
change,
and waning confidence in many of our elected representatives,
we pray for our prime minister, his deputy, the chancellor of
the exchequer and all the members of our new coalition government:
that they may be challenged and strengthened to set aside
party and personal ambitions for the security and well being
of all and be especially mindful of the needs of those whose
lives are burdened by ill-health, debt or despair.
And we pray for ourselves, that in all aspects
of local,
national and international sport and public life
we may be strong to uphold our Christian convictions,
and bold to challenge all that needs to be changed.
