The year 2008 marked the 40th anniversary of
the building of the Uniformed Organisations Headquarters Building, known
to me, with apologies to all Guiders, as "The Scout Hut", or just
The Hut. That year also experienced one of the coldest winters on record
and meetings had to be cancelled because the heating in The Hut simply couldn't
cope. Something had to be done to make it habitable.
Some parents obtained a detailed heat loss survey and explored avenues of
external funding. A grant of almost £10,000 was obtained from Leeds
City Council and additional funding from other organisations.
The upgrade will take place over the summer break so when the units return
in September The Hut should be snug and cosy right through the darkest months,
with the heating programmed to come on to suit the Units' needs. A hoped
for offshoot of this will be that The Hut would become a more attractive
proposition to potential hirers, which would see some commercial return
on our investment.
