(The retiring collection at the 6pm Carols
Round The Tree service on Christmas Eve will be donated to WaterAid.)
As we stand in the 21st century it is a sad fact that a child dies every
15 seconds due to diseases caused by a lack of safe water and appropriate
sanitation.
Young children can spend many hours each day walking miles to collect water. The water is usually dirty and unsafe as it comes from contaminated sources, but they have no alternative. Carrying heavy water containers is an exhausting and time consuming task taking up valuable time and energy and preventing children from going to school.
With the provision of such simple facilities as a safe, local water source, adequate sanitation and a programme of hygiene education the lives of so many can be changed at a very small price. For just £15 WaterAid can provide a lasting supply of safe water, adequate sanitation and knowledge of good hygiene practices to one person.
With your support this Christmas, which will be matched by Yorkshire Water, WaterAid can help many families in Southern India, who suffer as a result of a lack of clean water and sanitation.
In 2005 WaterAid is joining forces with a wide coalition
of charities, trade unions, campaigning groups and celebrities to Make Poverty
History. Visit www.makepovertyhistory.org.
