Women's World Day of Prayer
Friday 5th March 2010 at 7pm at St Edmund's
The Women's World Day of Prayer is an annual,
world-wide event when people meet together to observe a common Day of
Prayer following the same order of service, always on the first Friday
in March.
It is a great Wave of Prayer and Praise which encircles the globe all
day long from sunrise over the island of Tonga until sunset off the coast
of Samoa. More than 170 countries now take part. The actual form of the
service is composed by women of a different nationality each year and
is then translated into about 170 languages and a thousand dialects. A
tall order!
The service for 2010 has been devised by the women from the Republic of
Cameroon and they have chosen the theme "Let Everything that has
Breath Praise God". It reflects the fervour of their worship and
their exuberant and reverential outpouring of praise to God in wonderfully
joyous music, dancing and singing. Do come along and experience this for
yourself! To the people of the Cameroon, God's greatest gift is that of
life and they enjoy it fully.
Said to be "Africa in miniature" Cameroon has a wide variety
of climatic conditions, great natural diversity and with more than 240
ethnic groups, many cultural differences and tensions. All these aspects
are incorporated in the service they have composed. We also have the privilege
of members of the Cameroonian and other African communities participating
in our celebration on Friday 5th March.
So everyone - men, women and young people put on your most colourful clothes,
adorn yourselves with bright scarves and join in this very special World
Day of Prayer.
We also welcome members from St Andrew's, Lidgett Park Methodist Church,
Immaculate Heart and the Society of Friends to join in the choir as well
as in the congregation.
If you are unable to attend St Edmund's,
additional services are held as follows:-

11.00am Chapel Allerton Methodist Church, Town Street, Leeds 7
2pm Gipton Methodist Church, Oak Tree Place, Leeds 9
